Improve your horse handling skills so you can assist participants in our educational programs for children and adults. Learn to evaluate, retrain and rehabilitate rescued horses in our foster care program for use in educational programs and to increase their chances to be adopted. Volunteer training is free and includes groundwork, de-sensitization, communication cues, round pen work, bodywork and riding. Volunteers with all levels of previous experience will enjoy these classes.


Signups for ranch experiences will be limited to no more than 6 people per session with several sessions offered each week. Social distancing rules will apply, gloves and face masks will be required. All proceeds from your membership will help us defray our operating costs. Your membership will support and ensure BRHC can continue to provide essential foster care and training for our rescued horses, leadership programs for students, as well as offering additional benefits for those of you who are active ranch participants. Memberships can be purchased via our donor page, and are tax deductible.

Attendee, Leadership Awareness 2020

. Leadership Awareness classes include classroom orientation, a round pen demonstration, picnic lunch (students bring their own) and doing horse training exercises and like leading horses and mini-horses through obstacle courses. Some leadership classes are day camps. Sometimes a second day camp will include riding.




Attendee - Minis only, Advanced Volunteer Training 2020

Must have completed New Volunteer Orientation for Public and be a current member of BRHC to attend.

This class will be working with the Mini's only, haltering, leading, grooming, feet, doing the obstacles and generally giving them love and attention.

Improve your horse handling skills so you can assist participants in our educational programs for children and adults. Learn to evaluate, retrain and rehabilitate rescued horses in our foster care program for use in educational programs and to increase their chances to be adopted. Attendee - New Volunteer Orientation 2020

You must complete the Application Form prior to attending this session.

Learn about Blue River Horse Center, horse psychology, develop valuable leadership skills, tour our historic ranch, watch a demonstration of using positive energy working with horses, and start interacting with our beautiful horses and mini-horses. We do not ride during Orientation. All experience levels, from people who are unfamiliar with horses to experienced horse handlers, and all ages, from 5 to 95+, are welcome and will enjoy this class.

Children Volunteers: Children ages 5-18 are encouraged to volunteer at Blue River Horse Center.

Children ages 5 to 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. If a child under 12 would like to volunteer, the parent(s) must also sign up as a volunteer and go through the training program as a family.

Children ages 15 to 17 can sign up and take the volunteer training class without a parent or guardian. Once they have taken the first class they may volunteer, if they have an adult volunteer present who has agreed to supervise him/her while the child is volunteering, until he/she turns 18.


There is a charge of $25 per person for this class, however if you are unable to pay please contact our Executive Director John Longhill at JohnLonghill@mindspring.com as scholarships are available. Payment can be made via our donor page on the website. If you donate $150 for your annual membership then this class and subsequent Advanced Training classes are free of charge.


Due to the current COVD 19 situation we are asking all participants to complete some online training before attending the in person training, when you sign up for the Orientation class more details will be sent to you.

Trained Assistant, Minis 2020

Assistants must have attended Volunteer Orientation and be current members of BRHC. Mini classes will be grooming, hoof picking and desensitization and some hand feeding. Assistant will work with volunteers to ensure that their experience is enjoyable and that horses and humans remain safe.

Attendee, Meet the Minis 2020

This fun class introduces our “younglings” (kids 5+ years) to the basics of animal communication, and how to have better relationships with people by learning how animals do it. It is a two-hour class including an introduction to Blue River Horse Center and our animals, with hands on interactions with some of our special miniature horses and ponies. There will also be a chance to meet some of our other animals and a big horse.

Trained Assistant - Service Learning Day 2020

Most of the day you will assist program participants with specific projects that need to be done at the ranch such as fence repair, spring clean-up, landscaping, organization, maintenance and improving our classroom! During the last ½ hour of the day you will assist youth and adult groups practice animal communication and leading the horses.
